“The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change -” Heraclitus (475BC)
A very dear friend of mine, who is a “well seasoned sailor” gave me some good advice years ago when I was going through a rough patch: “Life is a series of storms, you are either just going into one, in the middle of one, or just coming out of one ” but they are part of life and here to stay.
Storms seem to me to be more routine in the music business which has been my life since a teenager, but again I suspect it is just life in general no matter what profession you are in.
Don’t let anyone fool you, in an industry that on the surface has a reputation for being “free thinking” and an adventurous life style, we have the same hang-ups that everyone else has. We don’t like change and we have developed at least as many idiosyncrasies as the next guy (probably more).
It seems like it is the lot of man to want everything in its proper place and under his control. I am not sure where “captain of my soul” originated, but it has never made sense to me. To me it is just one of life’s illusions that keeps our head in the sand.
I have circled the globe a number of times and have witnessed the depravity of man from the slums of Nigeria to the slums of Bangkok. But I have also witnessed the beauty of the folks who live high up in the Swiss Alps to the beautiful and humble farmers in Southern Spain.
At the end of the day, it is all about enjoying those few precious moments that the pieces of the puzzle come together. I have come to believe the world is not random, but somehow beautifully orchestrated.
